One village, one theme — unlock the full spectrum of Dong ethnic culture. Multiple distinct, authentic Dong villages each have their own unique cultural identity: Zhaoxing for its iconic architectural communities, Huanggang for its rice farming Grand Songs, Zhanli for its population governance wisdom, Zengying for its living heritage preservation, and Zaidang for its secluded, pristine original folk sounds. Every stop offers fresh insights, ultimately piecing together a complete map of Dong culture.

With Dong Grand Songs as the core thread running through the entire journey, we offer a field-grade sound exploration: resonant male ceremonial songs that reverberate through drum towers, daily narrative songs shared around hearths, love songs with natural reverb sung on the river, and pure, unaltered original folk songs from deep in the mountains. These songs rise naturally from hearths, drum towers and river waters — a living, evolving culture that continues to grow and transform to this day.

We make an exclusive visit to Zhanli Dong Village, known as "China’s No.1 Village for Population Culture", to unpack its 700-year-old wisdom of maintaining a stable population. There are no commercial performances at any point on the trip: all cultural inheritors are local villagers born and raised in the area.

The journey concludes in Rongjiang — the birthplace of Dong Sama culture and home to the viral cultural phenomenon "Village Super League" (Cun Chao). Here, you will witness how the thousand-year-old Dong collective spirit merges with modern sports, taking on a new form to reach audiences worldwide.

All travel proceeds are directly reinvested into intangible cultural heritage preservation and rural development, putting the principles of community symbiosis and sustainable tourism into practice.

Notices & Booking Info

Notices

[Trip Preparation] Guizhou's mountainous areas experience frequent rain, so please carry a lightweight raincoat or folding umbrella with you at all times. Temperature varies significantly between morning and evening, so a windproof thin jacket is recommended. Most village paths are paved with bluestone slabs, so non-slip, comfortable sneakers or hiking shoes are advised. Please bring insect repellent, sunscreen, and common medications. Some village homestays do not provide disposable toiletries, so it is recommended to bring your own. [Local Customs & Etiquette] The Dong ethnic group observes a road-blocking wine ceremony for visitors entering their villages; if you are not able to drink alcohol, you may politely decline. When entering sacrificial sites such as drum towers and Samat shrines, please keep quiet and refrain from touching ritual objects casually. Before taking photos of villagers, elders, children, or cultural inheritors, please ask for their permission first. The *Huan Hua Cao* (Flower Exchange) tradition in Zhanli Dong Village is part of traditional folk culture; please do not casually inquire about the details of this secret recipe, and respect local beliefs. When experiencing intangible cultural heritage programs, please follow the guidance of the inheritors. Ancient wells, sacred trees, and earth temples all hold religious significance, so do not climb, step on, or pollute them. [Travel Guidelines] All travelers are required to follow the Leave No Trace principle throughout the trip: do not pick wild plants, do not feed poultry or livestock, do not litter, and do not stray from designated paths. The Du Liu River and village streams are sources of drinking water for local residents, so please do not use chemical cleaning agents in the water. This itinerary is designed for a slow-paced, in-depth immersive experience, so there is no need to rush the schedule. The mountain switchback roads on this route have many sharp bends; if you are prone to motion sickness, please prepare medication in advance. [Special Notes] The Village Super League is a spontaneously organized local folk event, and the match schedule is subject to official local announcements. If no official matches are held during your trip, the itinerary will be adjusted to alternative experiences such as Village Super League cultural visits, player exchanges, and amateur friendly matches. Performers of Dong ethnic grand songs are all local villagers; in the event of special circumstances such as busy farming seasons or local festivals, the performers and song repertoire may be adjusted accordingly. In case of force majeure, the tour leader has the right to flexibly adjust the itinerary order and experience arrangements. [Booking Recommendations] It is recommended to book at least 30 days in advance. When booking, please confirm any dietary restrictions, special needs, and your physical condition. June to August is the rainy season in Guizhou, while March to May and September to November are the best seasons to visit. This tour requires a minimum of 2 people to form a group, and customized private itineraries are available.
